Updated: Apr 17, 2019

As cliche as it may be, fitness resolutions are still among the top of the list each year. And although many reports state people give up on these goals by February, StatisticBrain.com noted in their 2017 New Year's Resolutions poll results that those who do make resolutions are actually 10 times more likely to reach their goals than those who don't make any at all.

Sometimes, though, we are over-ambitious, which could be a contributing factor to throwing in the towel before we are even half-way through the year. There could be a number of reasons for this, but one may be trying too much, too fast. If fitness goals are among your resolutions, try these quick, low-impact exercises to jump-start your year:

Kettlebells:

Kettlebells don't have to be intimidating and many routines are easy on the joints and effective. Try squatting with the kettlebell by holding it close to your chest as you work into a low squat. Make sure your knees are pushing out (not rotating in) and bending your hips back. Start with 10 to 15 pounds and work your way up in weight. Check out this eight-minute kettlebell workout you can also do.

Swimming:

Swimming is an excellent full-body exercise and one that is gentler on the body. By swimming two to three times per week, you can not only lose weight but also improve your cholesterol levels and your overall body composition.

Power Yoga:

Yoga is great for both the mind and body, but with power yoga is great for also burning calories. In this type of routine, you're engaging various muscle groups and breathing faster than in traditional yoga. Find a class nearby or look online for instruction if you want to start out at home or prefer practicing yoga from the comfort of your living room. This 18-minute routine is one example of many that can be done at home.

Other Low-impact Exercises:

Other low-impact exercises to consider that are still effective in helping with weight loss include cycling, rowing on a rowing machine, elliptical training, and total body resistance training (TRX). Be sure to consult with a personal trainer and gym to ensure effective and proper technique.
