Flu Shot Q&A: How Important Is It?
Flu shots are here at Gatti Pharmacy, and our team is ready to help keep you healthy this season. Every year, we express the importance of the flu shot, but for some, if you’ve never had the flu, it may be hard to motivate yourself to get one or understand the value of this preventative method.
To help clear things up, we’ve compiled this helpful Q&A to consider when deciding whether or not you should get vaccinated:
HOW IS THE FLU FORECASTED?
The timing and severity of the flu in the U.S. can vary every year, season to season. The Influenza Division at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) works with the scientific community to determine flu predictions each year. The targets they focus can include flu onset, at what point in the season the flu will peak, and flu intensity. This research allows healthcare professionals, like ourselves, to plan ahead and lower the impact of the flu each year.
DOES IT REALLY MATTER IF I GET THE FLU SHOT?
The flu shot is the best way to prevent the flu. Influenza places a serious health burden on people in the U.S. each year. In fact, the CDC estimates that the flu has resulted in roughly 140,000-960,000 hospitalizations and between 12,000-79,000 deaths annually since 2010. Even if you got the flu shot last year, the virus changes each year, so you need it every year to be safe.
I GOT THE FLU EVEN THOUGH I GOT THE FLU SHOT. WHAT GIVES?
If you got the flu shot but still contracted the virus, it’s likely that you didn’t get the shot early enough to prevent it. It can take two to four weeks for the shot to do its magic, so it’s best to plan ahead each year and get the vaccination when it becomes available.
WHO NEEDS THE FLU SHOT?
Anyone can benefit from the flu shot. Even those who are healthy still need the flu shot as well to help prevent the spreading of the flu to those more susceptible to it, such as older individuals and young children. At Gatti Pharmacy, we offer the shot to everyone ages 9 and up. There is no appointment necessary, and it’s covered by most insurances.
