Lifestyle changes have been shown to decrease breast cancer risk even in high-risk women. The following four tips are just some things you can do to lower your risk:
- Be physically active. Being active helps you maintain a healthy weight, which, in turn, helps prevent breast cancer as obesity does increase your risk.
- Breast-feed. Breast feeding longer than six months may actually play a role in breast cancer prevention. As you breast-feed, you shed breast tissue as well as lower exposure to hormones that can help cancers grow. You can read more about this research and study here.
- Limit your alcohol intake. The more alcohol you consume, the greater your risk. Try to limit your alcohol intake to no more than one drink per day if you choose to drink.
- Avoid exposure to radiation and environmental pollution. Only have medical imaging method tests when necessary to help reduce your risk. Some research even suggests exposure to chemicals in gasoline fumes and vehicle exhaust may also play a role in breast cancer. Try to minimize your exposure to this as much as possible.
We at Gatti Pharmacy of course recommend you regularly do breast self-exams as well as ask your doctor about when you should get a mammogram, especially if you are 40 years or older. Make sure to also ask us about our mastectomy products and professional fitting services if you or someone you know is currently fighting breast cancer.
